Mapping Extinction Risks of Terrestrial Mammal Species
This visualisation translates data from the IUCN and Our World in Data on global extinction rates of terrestrial mammals into an editorial-style infographic. The infographic complements a written narrative with select visual elements to help the audience understand how many land mammal species are under threat as of 2022, in which countries and regions the problem is most acute, and a short brief about the drivers of extinction.
The two-tone colour palette was purposely selected to not only underline the somber tone of the story, but to also visually pull the reader into a seamless, consistent, and easy to follow experience. The contrast ensures inclusivity in design. The structured, clear-cut format of the paragraphs, combined with highlighted key statements, help reduce the cognitive load whilst making important statements easy to grasp.
